BATON ROUGE — Kyle Suire of Louisiana-Monroe, Jared Bradford of LSU and Heath Hennigan of Northwestern State were named Tuesday as the Louisiana Sportswriters Association Baseball Players of the Week.
Suire, a junior second baseman from Gonzales, La., was named Hitter of the Week as hit a team-best .474 (9-of-19) including two home runs and 10 RBI. Suire posted an on-base percentage of .524 in helping the Warhawks to a series victory against Western Kentucky. In Friday night’s win, he collected a career-high five RBI, including a home run. Suire recorded three multi-hit games and saw his average rise from .282 at the beginning of the week to .307 at week’s end.
Bradford and Hennigan shared the Pitcher of the Week designation.
Bradford, a junior right-hander from Hueytown, Ala., earned a save and a win in consecutive days to lead LSU to a series victory over No. 15 Mississippi State in Starkville. Bradford worked the ninth inning of Saturday’s 6-5 win, recording the final three outs on 15 pitches to earn his team-best fifth save of the season. Bradford then came back on Sunday as LSU’s starting pitcher and limited the Bulldogs ? the SEC’s top-hitting club with a .341 average ? to one run on six hits in 7.1 innings with two walks and five strikeouts . . . Bradford fired 102 pitches to earn his seventh victory, which also leads the LSU staff.
Hennigan, a sophomore right-hander from Pineville, La., tossed his second consecutive complete game win as he defeated Nicholls State 3-1 on Saturday. He was one strike from getting his first career shutout. He struck out eight batters and walked none.
