Hofer, Byrd Named LSU Athletes of the Week

BATON ROUGE — Pitchers Ryan Byrd and Dani Hofer were named the LSU Male and Female Athletes of the Week on Tuesday following a vote by a local media panel.

Bryd turned in a masterful performance in the Tigers’ 8-2 win over Ole Miss Saturday. The sophomore from Denham Springs, La., fired LSU’s first complete game of the season, limiting the Rebels to two runs on seven hits in nine innings with no walks and three strikeouts.

Bryd, who was making just his third career SEC start, improved his record to 5-1 on the season with a 3.65 ERA. His win marked the first SEC complete-game victory for an LSU pitcher since Clay Dirks defeated Tennessee on May 14, 2005 in Alex Box Stadium.

Hofer earned back-to-back wins in a pair of extra-inning contests versus Mississippi State last week. In her first appearance, the sophomore from Safety Harbor, Fla., threw a nine-inning complete game win over MSU, allowing just four hits while striking out 13.

After throwing 133 pitches in game one, Hofer came back in relief against the Bulldogs in game two. Taking to the circle in the seventh inning with the game tied, one out and the game-winning run on third, Hofer pitched two and two-third scoreless innings to pick up the victory.

On the week, Hofer allowed opponents to hit just .158, while she improved her record to 19-1 on the season.
