BATON ROUGE — Drew Anderson of UNO and Ryan Byrd of LSU were named Tuesday as the Louisiana Sportswriters Association Baseball Players of the Week.
Anderson, a senior outfielder from Phoenix, Ariz., was named Hitter of the Week as he led the Privateers to an impressive three-game sweep at Middle Tennessee with home runs in all three contests. He was 6-for-15 (.400 average) with three home runs and eight RBI.
Anderson posted a 1.000 slugging percentage for the weekend, helping the Privateers to their first road conference sweep since May 16, 2004.
Byrd, a sophomore left-hander from Denham Springs, La., was named Pitcher of the Week as he turned in a masterful performance in the Tigers’ 8-2 win over No. 13 Ole Miss on Saturday.
Byrd fired LSU’s first complete game of the season, limiting the Rebels to two runs on seven hits in nine innings with no walks and three strikeouts.
Byrd’s win marked the first SEC complete-game victory for an LSU pitcher since Clay Dirks defeated Tennessee on May 14, 2005 in Alex Box Stadium.
