Tennis’ Bryan Named to SEC Community Service Team

BATON ROUGE — Senior Danny Bryan of the LSU men’s tennis team was selected to the Southeastern Conference Community Service Team, the league office announced on Monday.

This marks the third-straight year Bryan has been elected to the team.

“Community service is something that I enjoy being involved in,” Bryan said. “I always want to give back to the community any way that I can. It’s an honor to get this recognition.”

The SEC sponsors Community Service Teams in all 20 sports.  The Community Service Team looks to highlight athletes from the SEC who gives back to their community in superior service efforts.

Bryan has represented the LSU men’s tennis team on the Student-Athlete Advisory Council for the past three years. SAAC serves as the governing body for LSU student-athletes.

During Christmas, Bryan spearheaded a toy drive where he and his teammates raised money to get a local underprivileged child clothes and toys for Christmas.

The General Studies major participated in “Jump Rope for Heart,” an event that raises money in the community for heart disease and stroke, which are America’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers. Bryan helped fourth graders at the school on the jump rope skills station. He explained the different jumps and helped the students record their numbers.

Bryan has made a number of visits to children hospitals where he visited the children to cheer them up while they were in the hospital. He spoke with the children, signed autographs and passed out LSU temporary tattoos.

Bryan and his teammates participated in “Duel Under the Oaks” a charity event held on LSU’s campus that helped raise more than $400,000 for LSU Health Sciences Center students impacted by the hurricanes that ripped through Louisiana in 2005.

Bryan volunteered at the GUMBO Games, which stands for “Games Uniting Mind and Body”, are a track and field competition designed for school-aged children aged 5-18 with physical or visual disabilities. The events are not unlike those at any other track meet with both running races, including distances of 20 meters up to 800 meters, and field events including the shot put and discus.

Bryan and his teammates are preparing for the SEC Tournament, which LSU will host starting Thursday. LSU received a first-round bye and will play the winner of the Arkansas vs. Tennessee match on Friday at 5 p.m.
