BATON ROUGE — LSU assistant women’s basketball coach Carla Berry announced Friday that she intends to leave the coaching profession to enter private business.
“I have enjoyed my years at LSU as a player and a coach, and I have memories I will cherish for a lifetime,” Berry said. “I am excited about the future of LSU women’s basketball, and I know the Lady Tigers will do great things with our new head coach, Van Chancellor. I will always be a great fan of LSU Lady Tiger Basketball.”
Chancellor, who took over as head coach this week, expressed his appreciation for Berry’s service to LSU.
“Carla has decided to step away from coaching to enter private business,” Chancellor said. “It was something she decided well before I accepted this position, and I appreciate her candor regarding her intentions. Her contributions, particularly in the area of recruiting, have been invaluable to the success of Lady Tiger Basketball. I have great respect for her integrity and dedication to LSU, especially the student-athletes. We wish her well in her future endeavors.”
Berry played at LSU from 1988-92, and was a member of the 1991 SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament championship team. She served as an assistant coach for six seasons for the Lady Tigers.
“Carla has served LSU well, as both a student-athlete and as a member of our coaching staff,” said LSU senior associate athletic director Judy Southard. “She has played an integral role in building this program to an elite status, and has played a major part of taking the Lady Tigers to four straight Final Fours. Carla will always be a part of the LSU family and we wish her all the best.”
