THE WOODLANDS, Texas — LSU men’s golf signee John Peterson has gotten off to a fast start in his national junior schedule as he posted a top-five finish at the PING Junior at The Woodlands on Sunday at the Panther Trail Course at The Woodlands Resort.
This marked the opening weekend of the national junior golf season sponsored by the prestigious American Junior Golf Association as the 132-player field featured junior golfers from 20 states, Washington D.C. and three countries, including Australia, Canada and Chile.
Peterson posted rounds of 67, 77 and 73 at the par-72 course to finish the championship in a tie for fourth place with a 54-hole score of 1-over par 217. In fact, his first-round score of 5-under 67 was the lowest of the weekend by any competitor and put him in first place after Friday’s action.
The Fort Worth, Texas, native improved upon his ninth-place finish in the event a year ago as he earned the second-highest finish for a member of the Class of 2007. He entered the event as the 79th-ranked junior golfer in the country regardless of class in the latest Polo Junior Golf Rankings.
Peterson finished in a four-way tie for fourth place at 1-over 217 along with the nation’s 13th-ranked player and Texas A&M signee Conrad Shindler of Westlake, Texas, en route to the fifth Top 10 finish of his career in a tournament sponsored by the AJGA.
He also finished better than five members of the Class of 2007 who are currently ranked among the nation’s Top 100 junior golfers in the latest Polo Junior Golf Rankings, including No. 46 Alexander Sitompul of Michigan, No. 49 Ravi Patel of Northwestern, No. 60 Jonathan Randolph of Ole Miss, No. 93 Bennett Klaus of Vanderbilt and No. 97 Riley Pumphrey of Oklahoma.
The AJGA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA is the largest organization of its kind and has an annual membership of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 49 states and 25 foreign countries.
