Skupski Knocks Off World’s No. 1 Doubles Team

LONDON — With a score of 6-4, 6-4, former LSU tennis player Ken Skupski, ranked No. 148 in the individual doubles ATP Tour Rankings, and doubles partner Colin Fleming defeated Bob and Mike Bryan, the No. 1 doubles team in the world, at center court on Wednesday at the Queen’s Club to advance into the quarterfinals of the Aegon Championships.

“For Ken, being from England and playing center court at the Queen’s Club to beat the No. 1 team in the world I’m sure has been a dream for him,” LSU head coach Jeff Brown said. “He has always been great, but this win will springboard his career to a level even higher than he expected.”

The victory catapults Skupski into the quarterfinals to square off against sixth-seeded and sixth- ranked Lukasz Kubot and Oliver Marach.  The tournament’s sixth-seed advanced into the quarterfinals after defeating Andy Murray and Lleyton Hewitt, 3-6, 6-3, 12-10.

While at LSU, Skupski earned three-time All-American status and left holding the fourth-most victories in school history with 104 wins.

A standout in both singles and doubles, Skupski earned the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s No. 1 billing along with former partner Mark Growcott in the preseason rankings during the 2005-06 season.

Skupski and Growcott continue to hold the record for most doubles wins in a season at LSU after posting 34  victories in 2005.
