BATON ROUGE — LSU men’s tennis senior standout Michael Venus received the Southeast Region nomination for the John Van Nostrand Memorial Award, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced on Monday.
 
The John Van Nostrand Memorial award is a stipend that goes to an outstanding senior men’s tennis player who plans to pursue a professional career after college.
 
Joining Venus in regional nominations are Ohio State’s Brian Koniecko, the University of Tulsa’s Arnau Brugues, Texas A&M’s Conor Pollock, Boise State’s Clancy Shields and the University of San Francisco’s Thong Tu.
 
The six nominees were put forth by their respective regional committee’s for consideration for the national award.
 
Venus’ outstanding senior season with the Tigers earned him Southeastern Conference Player of the Year as he posted an overall 25-8 record with 20 victories over nationally-ranked opponents.
 
In addition to Venus’ performance in dual and conference action, the 6-3 senior became the first LSU player in the history of the program to capture the D’Novo/ITA All-American crown in October 2008.
 
Currently Venus posts at No. 7 in the nation in singles, but at his peak position, held the No. 2 spot in the Campbell/ITA Rankings.  In doubles, Venus and partner Neal Skupski comprise the nation’s No. 2 duo, earning an incredible 15-7 record in dual competition.
 
Next up, Venus travels to Texas A&M for the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships slated for May 20-25 in College Station, Texas.
