BATON ROUGE — LSU’s CHAMPS/Life Skills Program celebrated the 2008-09 academic year Monday evening with its annual Spring Fling Event that featured community service awards, food and karaoke.
“The event was a lot of fun for the student-athletes to get together and celebrate the school year before finals,” Director Mike Mallet said. “This group has a lot to celebrate, as they excelled in the classroom, in the community, and on the field this year.
James Cluskey of men’s tennis took home Male Volunteer of the Year honors, while soccer’s Courtney Alexander was selected Female Volunteer of the Year. Alexander and her teammates won the traveling team cup trophy for the most involved team in the community.
“The student-athletes logged in almost 2,400 hours of community service this year,” Assistant Director Jade Jenkins said. “We’re so proud of the award winners and all the students that are using their time here at LSU to build relationships and grow as young adults.”
The 2009-10 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Officers also were chosen. Track and Field’s Lauren Saucier was elected President. Football’s Orlando Gunn and volleyball’s Lauren DeGirolamo will serve as the Vice President and Secretary, respectively.
