Seventy-Six LSU Student-Athletes Named to Honor Roll

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A total of 76 LSU student-athletes were named to the 2006 SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll, SEC Commissioner Mike Slive announced on Thursday.

The nationally ranked LSU men’s and women’s track teams topped the list of teams with members on the Honor Roll, placing 21 women, including 2006 SEC Indoor pentathlon champion Megan Akre, and 12 men on the list, including Isa Phillips, who placed sixth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 400-meter hurdles.

In addition, 10 members of the Tiger baseball team made the list, while nine members of the nationally ranked softball team were honored, including All-American Emily Turner. Seven men’s golfers and seven women’s golfers, including Louisiana Golfer of the Year Melissa Eaton, were on the list. Five men’s tennis players, including All-Americans Ken Skupski and Mark Growcott, and five women’s tennis players were honored.

A total of 845 student-athletes were named to the 2006 SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll. South Carolina topped the list with 110 student-athletes on the spring academic roster. Georgia was next with 92 honorees, followed closely by Florida with 85 spring student-athletes honored. Both South Carolina and Georgia field equestrian teams in the spring that figure into their total number of spring honor roll recipients.

LSU ranked fifth overall among the 12 conference schools with recipients on the Spring Academic Honor Roll. However, the Tigers are fourth when you only take into consideration sports that are sponsored by the SEC, one behind Mississippi State with 77.

Each student-athlete must 1) have a GPA of 3.00 for either the preceding academic year or have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; 2) be on scholarship, a letter winner or have participated on a varsity team for two years if non-scholarship; 3) have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and 4) have been a member of the varsity team for the sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment.

The 2006 SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2005 Summer, 2005 Fall and 2006 Spring terms.
