ALEXANDRIA, La. — Jeanetta Burns Hayes, a former guard for the LSU women’s basketball team, passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 40.
Burns played at LSU for Hall of Fame head coach Sue Gunter from 1984 to 1988. She scored 1,070 points and dished out 430 assists in 117 career games. She ranked ninth on LSU’s career scoring list when she graduated in 1988 and now sits 22nd on the list. Her assist total was the LSU record when her career ended and she is fourth now.
Burns, who was employed at Central State Hospital, is survived by her husband Benny Hayes, a 16-year-old daughter Courtney and nine-year-old twins Shaline and Catina.
Arrangements are pending for services to be held at Progressive Funeral Home in Alexandria.
