BATON ROUGE ? LSU senior gymnast April Burkholder was recognized Wednesday by Baton Rouge Mayor-President Kip Holden and Councilman Mike Walker as May 10 was proclaimed April Burkholder Day in the City of Baton Rouge and East Baton Rouge Parish.
Burkholder was honored for a tremendous four-year career that sees her leaving LSU as the most decorated gymnast in school history.
During her career, Burkholder earned a school record 14 All-America honors and was named an All-SEC selection four times. She was also recognized as the NCAA Central Regional Gymnast of the Year twice and the SEC Gymnast of the Year on two separate occasions after earning conference Freshman of the Year honors in 2003.
Burkholder capped her illustrious career at this year’s NCAA Championships where she won the national beam title, finished third in the all-around standings and placed among the top eight on the vault, bars and floor.
The Houston native left her stamp on the LSU record books as well as she owns the school’s all-around record (39.875) and shares the school record marks on the vault, beam and floor, having posted perfect 10.0s on each of the three events.
Burkholder also turned in solid academic career while at LSU as she was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2005 and is scheduled to graduate next week with a degree in general studies.
