CHICAGO — On Monday, the Chicago Cubs outrighted and sent Michael Restovich to Triple-A Iowa on Monday and called up versatile former LSU second baseman Ryan Theriot from the Minor League team.
Restovich had apperaed in 10 games, and was 2-for-12. Theriot was batting .282 at Iowa with three doubles, 12 RBIs and five stolen bases.
“The thinking was that he’s a very fundamentally sound young man,” Baker said of Theriot. “He can give us some energy. He can play all positions. The way we were going, we had to make a change someplace. He was playing pretty good.”
The Cubs entered Monday’s game having lost six in a row.
Theriot can play outfield as well as second, short and third. He was surprised at the callup.
“You’re never looking over your shoulder to see what’s going to happen,” Theriot said. “Wherever you are, you play hard. You can hope.”
He appeared in nine games last year with the big-league team as part of a September callup, and was with the big-league team for a long time this spring. He’s still getting used to outfield vs. infield.
“The more innings I get, the more comfortable I am out there [in the outfield],” said Theriot, who played some outfield at Iowa but mostly second base. “Obviously, it’s a slower read. In the outfield, you have to wait and see what it’s going to do and go.”
