Klein, Turner Receive Weekly Honors from LSWA

BATON ROUGE — Leslie Klein and Emily Turner were selected the Louisiana Softball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week as LSU swept the state honors as announced by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association on Tuesday.

Klein led the Tigers to a three-game series sweep at Kentucky and a doubleheader sweep of Northwestern State last week. She went 9-for-17 to hit .529 for the week with a pair of doubles, a triple and a home run while scoring six runs. In addition, the junior tied for the team lead with eight RBI to pound away at a .941 slugging percentage.

The outfielder recorded a hit in all five LSU games last week, including three multiple-hit games. In the sweep of Kentucky, she improved her average to .545 with four RBIs. In the final game of the series, she accounted for four of the six LSU runs as she went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs.

Turner, a junior right-hander for the nationally ranked Tigers, went 3-0 on the week with a win over Northwestern State and a pair of wins at Kentucky. Posting a 0.33 earned run average, she allowed only one earned run in 21 innings pitched, while allowing opponents to hit just .149 against her.

In her first appearance of the week, she gave up just one hit to Northwestern state in a compete-game shut out of the Demons, her second complete-game one-hitter of the season and her eighth shutout of the year. Despite snow flurries in both of her appearances in Kentucky, she allowed just 10 total hits in two complete games and gave up just one earned run on a solo home run in the seventh inning of her first appearance.

This is the second consecutive Louisiana Pitcher of the Week honor for Turner this season and the third LSWA Louisiana Pitcher of the Week honor for LSU. It marks the first Louisiana Hitter of the Week honor for the Tigers this year.

These are the third Louisiana Hitter/Pitcher of the Week awards this season. The LSWA will announce the weekly honors on Monday afternoons each week until the completion of the 2006 season.
