LSU leads Tulane, 180-128-3, in a series that began with the first intercollegiate athletic event in LSU history, a 10-8 victory for the Fighting Tiger baseball squad over Tulane in 1893. LSU has won 13 of its 18 meetings with Tulane over the past nine seasons, though the Green Wave won both matchups last season – a 7-1 victory on March 29 in Baton Rouge and a 4-1 win on April 26 in New Orleans. Paul Mainieri has a 13-7 mark against Tulane in his 11-season coaching tenure at LSU.

“Tulane has an outstanding program, and they beat us twice last season, so they certainly have our attention,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “We’re looking forward to a great matchup between two Louisiana teams that have tremendous respect for one another. We’ll be wearing the throwback uniforms, and we’re expecting a lot of energy in our stadium.”

The Tigers split four games last week, defeating Southeastern Louisiana on Wednesday before winning one of three games at Florida over the weekend.

Sunday’s 10-6 win over the Gators featured a tremendous LSU comeback, as the Tigers trailed 5-0 after five innings and 6-2 after seven innings. LSU erupted for six runs in the eighth inning with three two-run homers by third baseman Josh Smith, designated hitter Beau Jordan and second baseman Cole Freeman.

Jordan led the Tigers’ 12-hit attack in Sunday’s win, as he was 2-for-4 with a bases-loaded, two-out, two-run single in the sixth inning and the two-run homer in the eighth.

LSU enters the game batting .309 on the season with 21 homers and 30 steals in 43 attempts. Second baseman Cole Freeman leads the team in hitting, batting .378 with 21 runs scored and nine stolen bases.

LSU rightfielder Greg Deichmann is hitting .348 with team-highs of eight homers and 31 RBI, and leftfielder Antoine Duplantis is batting .346 with 28 RBI and 24 runs scored.

Freshman third baseman Josh Smith led LSU in hitting last week, batting .429 (6-for-14) in four games with two doubles, one homer and eight RBI. Smith helped lead the Tigers to Sunday’s win over Florida, as he was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and three  RBI.

Smith was 4-for-4 in Wednesday’s win over Southeastern Louisiana with two doubles and four RBI. The outing marked his second 4-for-4 night of the season, as he also accomplished the feat on March 8 at McNeese State.

Tulane is hitting .247 as a team this season with 23 homers and 19 steals in 32 attempts. The Green Wave is led at the plate by senior infielder Hunter Williams, who is hitting .389 with nine doubles, one triple, three homers and 16 RBI.

Sophomore outfielder Grant Witherspoon is batting .298 with four doubles, three homers and 11 RBI, and senior outfielder Jarret DeHart has team-highs of six homers and 26 RBI.
