Notes on the Tigers
LSU is ranked No. 11 this week in the Baseball America poll, and the Tigers are No. 17 in this week’s official NCAA RPI rankings … LSU is 14-10 in the SEC, tied for third place with Ole Miss in the SEC West and two games behind division leader Texas A&M … LSU’s 10-9 win in 10 innings on Saturday over Arkansas marked the biggest comeback win for the Tigers in 28 years … LSU trailed Arkansas, 9-1, heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Tigers erased the eight-run deficit to earn the victory … the comeback on Saturday was the biggest for LSU since April 10, 1988, when the Tigers overcame a 13-3 deficit against Ole Miss to win, 15-13, in 10 innings … LSU averaged just under 11 hits per game in the Arkansas series, batting .308 (32-for-104) in three games with 22 runs, four doubles and one home run … outfielder Brennan Breaux was named SEC Co-Freshman of the Week on Monday as he helped lead LSU to a three-game series sweep over Arkansas … Breaux batted .667 (4-for-6) in the series with one double, four RBI and a .714 on-base percentage … Breaux entered Saturday’s Game 2 in the sixth inning and responded by going 3-for-3 at the plate, including a two-run double in the bottom of the ninth inning that highlighted a four-run rally to send the contest into extra innings before LSU won in 10 innings, 10-9 … Breaux started in left field on Sunday and responded by delivering a two-out, two-run single that scored two runs in the second inning and proved to be the game-winning hit in the Tigers ‘ 7-1 victory … junior second baseman Cole Freeman batted .500 (5-for-10) in the Arkansas series with two RBI and two runs scored … freshman third baseman Chris Reid hit .417 (5-for-12) in the series with one double, one RBI and two runs … junior catcher Jordan Romero belted a three-run homer on Sunday to highlight LSU’s win … Romero has a team-high eight homers, and he leads the club with 37 RBI … sophomore right-hander Alex Lange turned in an outstanding effort to earn the win in Game 1 against the Razorbacks — Lange worked 7.1 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with one walk and six strikeouts … freshman right-hander Caleb Gilbert recorded a win in his first career collegiate start on Sunday in Game 3, as he pitched five scoreless innings and allowed five hits with one walk and two strikeouts … junior right-hander Parker Bugg was brilliant in relief of Gilbert, tossing three shutout innings while allowing just one hit with no walks and three strikeouts.
