Notes on the Tigers
LSU is ranked No. 8 this week in the Baseball America poll after posting a 2-2 mark in its four games last week … LSU is in a three-way tie with Ole Miss and Mississippi State for second place in the SEC Western Division, two games behind Texas A&M … LSU shortstop Kramer Robertson has been named to the Watch List for the 2016 Brooks Wallace Award, given annually to the nation’s best shortstop … Robertson, a junior from McGregor, Texas, is hitting .320 (49-for-153) this season with 13 doubles, one triple, one homer, 28 RBI, 42 runs and 10 stolen bases … He is LSU’s leading hitter in SEC games, batting .384 (28-for-73) with six doubles, one homer, 14 RBI, 17 runs and four stolen bases, and he is second on the team in hitting with runners in scoring position with a .389 average … Robertson, who is fourth in the SEC in runs scored and sixth in the league in doubles, batted .462 (6-for-13) in last weekend’s series versus Mississippi State with two doubles, one homer, three RBI and two runs … sophomore right-hander Alex Lange turned in a brilliant effort on Saturday in a 2-1 loss to Mississippi State … Lange fired a complete game, limiting the Bulldogs to one earned run on four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts … the complete game was the first by an LSU pitcher this season, and the first since last season’s College World Series, when Lange recorded a complete-game victory over Cal State Fullerton … Lange currently ranks No. 5 in the SEC in strikeouts with 75 … freshman rightfielder Antoine Duplantis launched his first career home run on Friday versus Mississippi State, a grand slam in the seventh inning that reduced a 9-4 deficit to 9-8 … Duplantis, who had a total of five RBI in the series, is the Tigers; leading overall hitter, batting .358 (58-for-162) with six doubles, four triples, one homer, 25 RBI, 31 runs and 10 stolen bases … Duplantis is No. 10 in the SEC in batting average and No. 6 in the league in base hits, and he has compiled hitting streaks of 19 games and 14 games this season … junior right-hander Russell Reynolds earned his first win of the season Sunday versus Mississippi State with an excellent relief outing … he entered the game in the third inning with LSU trailing, 3-0, and he fired 2.2 shutout innings, allowing just two hits with no walks and two strikeouts … the No. 36 jersey of former LSU All-American first baseman Eddy Furniss was retired on Friday night prior to the Tigers’ game with Mississippi State in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field … Furniss joins coach Skip Bertman (No. 15) and pitcher Ben McDonald (No. 19) on LSU Baseball’s retired jersey list.
