BATON ROUGE – Former LSU women’s basketball assistant coach Maggi Romero who served on Hall of Famer Sue Gunter’s staff from 1982-86 died Saturday at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette.
Romero, 73, was a member of Gunter’s staff for a quartet of 20-win seasons which were highlighted by the first two of the program’s 24 NCAA Tournament appearances. LSU amassed 27 victories and reached the NCAA Tournament Elite 8 during the 1985-86 season.
Before joining the LSU staff, Romero was a successful coach at New Iberia High School where her teams produced six district championships, four state runner-up finishes and a one state title. She was named outstanding coach in her district on five occasions.
Romero is survived by her sisters, Beverly Credeur, Maudry Kennedy, and Nancy Terrell; and her many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Aaron and Jeanne LeBlanc Romero.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday with a Rosary at 6:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in New Iberia.
