Four Among ‘Baseball America’ All-Americans

OMAHA, Neb. — Four LSU players were named Thursday to Baseball America magazine’s All-America teams. Junior shortstop Alex Bregman and freshman right-handed pitcher Alex Lange were named to the first team, senior catcher Kade Scivicque was named to the second team, and junior outfielder Andrew Stevenson was named to the third team.

Bregman, a 2015 Golden Spikes Award finalist and a two-time first-team all-American, has enjoyed a brilliant three-year career at LSU, batting .334 (258-for-773) with 56 doubles, 10 triples, 21 homers, 148 RBI, 150 runs and 65 stolen bases.

Bregman, the 2013 Brooks Wallace Award winner as the nation’s best shortstop, is batting .312 this season with 22 doubles, three triples, nine homers, 49 RBI, 56 runs and 37 stolen bases, the second-highest single-season steals total in LSU history.

Bregman, product of Albuquerque, N.M., became the second overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft on Monday when he was selected by the Houston Astros.

Lange has posted an 11-0 record with a 1.89 ERA in 105 innings for the Tigers. In 16 starts, the right-hander has struck out 121 and limited opponents to a .214 cumulative batting average.

The Lee’s Summit, Mo., native was voted National Freshman Pitcher of the Year and SEC Freshman of the Year, and he received first team all-SEC recognition. He is second in the SEC in ERA, wins and strikeouts, and he is fifth in the conference in opponent batting average.

Scivicque, a native of Maurepas, La., is one of three finalists for the Johnny Bench Award, given to the nation’s most outstanding catcher. A first-team All-SEC and second-team All-America selection, he is hitting .347 this season with 20 doubles, six homers, and 45 RBI, and he has thrown out 18 runners attempting to steal.

Scivicque was selected in the fourth round Tuesday by the Detroit Tigers.

Stevenson, a product of Youngsville, La., is LSU’s leading hitter this season, batting .356 (84-for-236) with 11 doubles, five triples, one homer, 21 RBI, 53 runs and 26 stolen bases.

Stevenson, who was selected in the second round Monday by the Washington Nationals, is third in the Southeastern Conference in stolen bases, sixth in the league in batting average, sixth in base hits, sixth in triples and ninth in runs scored.
