LAFAYETTE, La. – LSU catcher Kade Scivicque and Tulane right-hander Alex Massey were each selected for the second time this season as the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) Baseball Players of the Week after their recent performances on the diamond.
The pair were nominated by their respective baseball sports information directors and selected by a panel of statewide media members.
Scivicque, a senior from Maurepas, La., was named the LSWA Hitter of the Week for the second time this season after earning the award for his performance during the month of February. In three games for the No. 1-ranked Tigers last week, Scivicque went 6-for-9 (.667) at the plate with two doubles, one home run, five RBI and three runs scored. In LSU’s doubleheader sweep of Georgia on Saturday, Scivicque went 5-for-7 at the plate with a double, a home run, three RBI and two runs scored.
He extended his current hitting streak to 23 games, the longest by an LSU player since 2013 when Alex Bregman recorded a 23-game streak. Scivicque, second overall in the SEC in hitting, upped his current batting average to .404 on the season (55-for-136) with 13 doubles, five homers, 32 RBI and 22 runs scored.
Massey, a junior from Baton Rouge, La., was selected as the LSWA Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive week after helping Tulane knock off its second nationally ranked program in a week. Massey tossed 6.1 innings of shutout baseball in helping Tulane defeat No. 15 UCF, 10-0, and clinch the three-game American Athletic Conference series.
He fanned five batters while allowing five hits and just one extra-base hit for his second-consecutive victory, after defeating Houston last Sunday. The performance was the first shutout of the year for the Green Wave in which Massey pitched. In AAC play, Massey improved his record to 3-0 with a 1.69 ERA in three starts and four total appearances, totaling 20 strikeouts in 25.1 innings.
