BATON ROUGE, La. – The Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes honored six LSU student-athletes for their academic achievements and community service for October.
Each month, five student-athletes are recognized for their academic improvement, dedication and proven ability. In addition, one student-athlete is chosen through LSU’s Student-Athlete Affairs program for their volunteerism and commitment to the community.
October’s student-athletes of the month are Stephanie Amichia [Women’s Basketball], Alex Bregman [Baseball], Colby Delahoussaye [Football], Matthew Rhorer [Track and Field] and Logan Rysemus [Swimming and Diving]. Tori Bliss [Track and Field] was selected as the Shaquille O’Neal Life Skills Program Student-Athlete of the Month.
Bliss and Bregman are both studying sports administration while Delahoussaye is studying business administration. Amichia is a psychology major, Rhorer is a finance major and Rysemus is a double major in political science and international studies.
Bliss, a junior thrower from Portage, Indiana, earned her first career All-America honor in 2014 when she finished with a silver medal at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Oregon where she broke the LSU women’s shot put record with a mark of 57 feet, 4 ¼ inches. She recently volunteered to work with the children at Healing Place Church where she has logged an impressive 74 hours of community service this semester. Bliss is also on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as a representative for track and field.
A freshman forward from Suwanee, Georgia, Amichia signed with the Tigers in November of 2013. Amichia was a consensus four-star prospect and one of the top prep players in the Southeast and looks forward to making an impact for the Lady Tigers in 2014.
Bregman, a junior infielder from Albuquerque, New Mexico, returns to LSU after a very productive 2013 season in which he was named the 2013 National Freshman of the Year. Bregman, who was drafted by the Red Sox in the 29th round of the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft, also won the Brooks Wallace award for the nation’s best shortstop.
A sophomore kicker from New Iberia, Delahoussaye is currently starting at placekicker for the Tigers in 2014 after a dazzling freshman season. Delahoussaye connected on 13-of-14 field goals and 56-of-57 point-after touchdowns in 2013 and is staying consistent with steady kicking for the Tigers this season.
Rohrer, a freshman distance runner from Baton Rouge, served as an 800-meter specialist during his true freshman season indoors with the Tigers in 2014. He clocked a personal best in the event last season with a time of 1:53.91 at the Texas A&M Triangular.
A sophomore swimmer from Tacoma, Washington, Rysemus is coming off a strong freshman season for the Tigers. Last season, Rysemus swam fast enough to own three times on LSU’s top 10 list. He finished 14th overall in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly at the SEC Championships.
For putting forth extra effort in the classroom and community in addition to their rigorous academic and competition schedules, these six student-athletes will have their pictures displayed on the wall in the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes.
