Notes on the Tigers
LSU won four of its five games last week – including an SEC series victory at No. 10 Arkansas – to improve to 34-3 overall and 13-2 in conference play … LSU has a four-game lead over Arkansas in the SEC Western Division, and the Tigers trail Vanderbilt by one game in the overall league standings … LSU’s 34-3 overall record is the best 37-game mark in Fighting Tiger baseball history, surpassing the 33-4 records compiled by the 1997 and 1986 clubs … the Tigers’ 13-2 SEC record is the school’s best 15-game league start since the 1997 club was also 13-2 … LSU is 10-0 this season in games decided by two runs or less, and the Tigers are 3-0 in extra-inning games, including Sunday’s 5-3, 10-inning victory at Arkansas that clinched the series win … LSU has won eight of its past nine SEC series with Arkansas … the Tigers have won five straight road series, dating back to last season, and three of those five road series wins have come against Top 10 teams – the Tigers defeated No. 1 South Carolina last season, and LSU posted series victories over No. 8 Mississippi State and No. 10 Arkansas this season … LSU has a total of three series victories this season over Top 10 teams – at No. 8 Mississippi State, at home vs. No. 7 Kentucky and at No. 10 Arkansas … sophomore right-hander Aaron Nola fired the first complete game of his career Friday at No. 10 Arkansas, limiting the Razorbacks to two runs on four hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts … the complete game was also the first recorded by an LSU pitcher since May 18, 2012, when Kevin Gausman posted a win at South Carolina … Nola threw 110 pitches in the victory and retired the first 11 batters he faced before allowing a single with two outs in the fourth inning … Nola moved into first place in the SEC in strikeouts with 72, and he improved to 6-0 on the year with a 2.47 ERA … freshman shortstop Alex Bregman hit .368 (7-for-19) in the Tigers’ five games last week with one triple, one homer, seven RBI and four runs scored … Bregman saw his 23-game hit streak end Saturday at No. 10 Arkansas, but he helped lead the Tigers to a series-clinching victory on Sunday by going 3-for-4 at the plate with a two-run homer … the 23-game streak was the fourth-longest in LSU history … Bregman leads the SEC with a .432 cumulative batting average, and he has produced 10 doubles, six triples, four homers and 38 RBI this season … Bregman was invited last week to join Team USA this summer for its 33-game international tour.
