Golfer Yi Named Honorable Mention All-America

BATON ROUGE – LSU men’s golf standout Sang Yi certainly proved himself worthy of All-America recognition with his performance as a senior with the Tigers in 2011-12, and he has been rewarded with a pair of honorable mention All-America selections in recent weeks by PING and Golfweek.

Yi first earned Honorable Mention All-America honors from Golfweek as the No. 39-ranked player in the country in the final Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index for the 2011-12 season.

Yi was then named to the PING Honorable Mention All-America Team on Wednesday with the release of its postseason awards by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

This marks the fourth-straight season in which an LSU Tiger has earned All-America recognition with his outstanding performance on the course as Yi joins such standouts as John Peterson (2009, 2010, 2011) and Andrew Loupe (2010, 2011) in the storied history of the LSU Men’s Golf program.

A native of Carrollton, Texas, Yi has added to an already impressive resume as a senior after claiming his first career First-Team All-SEC selection following the SEC Championships.

After leading the Tigers into NCAA Regional play for the fifth-straight season, Yi wrapped up the season as LSU’s leading scorer while posting his career-low 71.55 scoring average in 12 tournament appearances for the fourth-best average by an LSU Tiger since 1982. Yi also established career bests with his four top-five finishes and eight top-10 finishes in 54-hole tournaments during his senior campaign.

Yi cemented his All-America candidacy with a strong performance in his fourth NCAA Regional start for the Tigers as he earned a seventh-place finish at the 2012 NCAA Palo Alto Regional.

It marked the fourth-straight season in which an LSU Tiger has finished in the Top 10 of the leaderboard in NCAA Regional action as Yi again joined Peterson (2009, 2010, 2011) and Loupe (2009) with a top-10 finish in NCAA postseason play as one of the team’s elite performers in recent years.
