Baseball Returns Home, to Begin Five-Game Week

BATON ROUGE — Third-ranked LSU (25-7) plays host to Alcorn State (7-25) at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Alex Box Stadium.

The game will be carried by the affiliates of the LSU Sports Radio Network, with Baton Rouge affiliate WDGL 98.1 FM serving as the flagship station. Live video, audio and stats of the game may be accessed in the Geaux Zone at www.LSUsports.net/live.

LSU won two of three games last weekend at top-ranked Florida as the Tigers moved into sole possession of first place in the SEC Western Division. The Tigers are 5-1 over the past two weekends against Top 3 teams – LSU swept three games from Arkansas March 30-April 1 when the Razorbacks were ranked No. 3 before winning two of three over the No. 1 Gators last weekend. Nine of LSU’s 12 SEC games played this season have been decided by one run, and the Tigers are 7-2 in the one-run league contests.

“We’re very pleased to have won the series at Florida, but we still have a long way to go,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “No one is handing out trophies at this time of the year. We’ve got five games this week, beginning with Alcorn State, so our focus right now is on winning the game Tuesday night.”

Saturday’s 8-7 win over Florida marked Mainieri’s 1,100th career victory in 30 seasons as a collegiate head coach. Mainieri is one of only 11 active NCAA Division I head coaches to post 1,100 wins – his overall record is 1,100-603-7 as the coach at St. Thomas (1984-88), Air Force (1989-94), Notre Dame (1995-2006) and LSU (2007-present)

Mainieri said that sophomore right-hander Joe Broussard (3-0, 4.08 ERA) will start Tuesday’s game on the mound for LSU. Alcorn State coach Barret Rey will counter with senior right-hander Cedric Pomerlee (0-3, 6.75 ERA).

LSU junior left-hander Brent Bonvillain was named SEC Pitcher of the Week on Monday by the league office. Bonvillain, a native of Houma, La., posted two wins in two relief appearances last week, including a brilliant outing against Florida on Saturday. He worked six innings in two appearances, allowing one run on two hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Bonvillain posted a relief win over the Gators Saturday in the Tigers’ series-clinching win, allowing just one hit in four scoreless innings with one walk and five strikeouts.

Freshman first baseman Tyler Moore enjoyed an outstanding week at the plate, batting .700 (7-for-10) in three games with one double, three RBI, one run scored and a .727 on-base percentage. Moore collected a career-best four hits in Saturday’s series-clinching win over Florida, and he was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI in LSU’s win last Tuesday over Louisiana College.

Freshman centerfielder Jared Foster hit .467 (7-for-15) in four games last week with one RBI and five runs scored. Foster batted .400 (4-for-10) in the series victory over Florida with a stolen base and two runs scored.

Sophomore second baseman JaCoby Jones doubled three times in the Florida series, collecting four RBI while scoring four runs. Senior reserve catcher Jordy Snikeris made two starts last week, batting .714 (5-for-7) with one double, two RBI and two runs

The Braves are led at the plate by senior infielder Eduardo Gonzalez, who is batting .344 with 12 doubles, five homers and 35 RBI. Senior infielder Rodney Warren is hitting .304 with three doubles, five homers and 17 RBI.

LSU leads the all-time series with Alcorn State, 3-0, including a 19-0 win over the Braves in the second game of the 2012 season on February 18.
