For The LSWA

BATON ROUGE – NCAA outdoor track and field champions Barrett Nugent and Kimberlyn Duncan of LSU and Trecey Rew of Northwestern State highlight the 2011 Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s All-Louisiana track and field team announced Saturday evening.

The team was chosen based on the best three times in the state in 21 men’s and women’s event from the national qualifying list through the NCAA Champions. The tracks SIDs in the state were able to nominate for special awards which were then voted on by an LSWA panel.

Nugent, a junior for the Tigers, captured the Men’s Track Athlete of the Year after bringing home the title in the 110-meter hurdles, running a wind-aided 13.28 seconds in the national finals. Nugent’s top time came in April when he posted a 13.19 winning time in the Texas Relays. Nugent became the first LSU Tiger to win the NCAA title in the hurdles since 1987. He also won the SEC title as well.

Duncan won the Women’s Track Athlete of the Year honor after the sophomore swept the indoor and outdoor NCAA titles in the 200-meter dash. The sophomore became the sixth woman in NCAA history to sweep NCAA 200-meter titles and the first Lady Tiger since 1989. Duncan was the top individual performer at the 2011 outdoors scoring 20.5 points. Her wind-legal seasonal best of 22.24 in the 200-meter final is the 2011 world leader and the third-fastest time in collegiate history.

Rew earned Women’s Field Athlete of the Year as the Northwestern State athlete won the discus with a final toss of 192-4 to move from fourth to first. She was also named the Southland Conference Athlete of the Year and Field Events Athlete of the Year. She won 26 of NSU’s 102 points as the Lady Demons finished an all-time best of second in the SLC championships.

The Men’s Field Athlete of the Year was LSU senior Walter Henning, an NCAA Indoor champ in the weight throw and finished third in the NCAA Outdoor Hammer Throw.  Henning swept conference titles in the SEC Championships and seven All-American honors, ranking No. 4 among collegians during the outdoor season with a top mark of 226-8 in the hammer throw.

LSU Coach Dennis Shaver was the choice as the state’s top men’s coach and tied with Mike Heimerman of Northwestern State for women’s coach of the year. Shaver’s Tigers finished fourth both indoors and outdoors in the NCAA Championships and joined Florida and Texas as the only men’s programs to capture a pair of team trophies at the championships in 2011. On the women’s side, Shaver’s Lady Tigers won both the SEC Indoor and Outdoor titles and then finished third in both NCAA Championships. He was named the South Central Region Women’s Head Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Heimerman led the Lady Demons to their best finish (since 1987), second, at the Southland Conference meet. He also was NSU’s throws coach, producing three All-American awards, most in one NCAA meet ever for NSU women as the Demons finished 29th, their best ever in the women’s championship.

The choices as Freshman of the Yyear were Trey Hadnot of Louisiana Tech and Jasmin Stowers of LSU. Hadnot advanced to the NCAA semifinals of the 200 meters after begin named Male Track Athlete of the Year and Male Freshman of the Year in the Western Athletic Conference. Stowers swept SEC titles in the sprint hurdles with victories in the 60-meter hurdles indoors and the 100-meter hurdles outdoors at the SEC Championships. She made history at the SEC Outdoors becoming the first Lady Tiger freshman to win the SEC titles in the 100 hurdles in school history. She was named the SEC Women’s Freshman Runner of the Year.

LSU’s Horatio Williams and Semoy Hackett were the choice for non-freshman Newcomers of the Year. Williams was third in the 200 meters in the NCAA Outdoor championships and was on the second leg of the 4×100 meter relay team that finished in fourth at nationals. The junior also finished second in the 100 meter championship with a PR of 11.09.

Hackett ran the second leg of LSU’s 4×100-meter relay team that won the national title and was the No. 2 ranked performer in the NCAA in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes during the 2011 regular season. Hackett won the SEC Commissioner’s Trophy as the top individual point scorer at the SEC Outdoor Championships and the SEC Women’s Runner of the Year.
