NEW YORK — In celebration of its historic 15th season, the WNBA is honoring the most influential players since its inception in 1997, and LSU great Seimone Augustus of the Minnesota Lynx is one of 30 official nominees for the Top 15 Players of all time.
Fans can cast a vote for their Top 15 Players of all time once per day by going online to http://www.wnba.com/top15players starting Thursday at 11 a.m. CT and ending at 11 p.m. CT on July 13.
The nominees were selected by a panel comprised of media members and basketball experts, with consideration given to such factors as on-court performance and ability, leadership, sportsmanship and community service, as well as to contributions to team success and the overall growth of women’s basketball.
The WNBA’s Top 15 Players will be unveiled and honored at the 2011 WNBA All-Star Game, where the San Antonio Silver Stars will host the midseason classic for the first time in franchise history. ABC will nationally broadcast the game on Saturday, July 23, at 2:30 p.m. CT.
Augustus has averaged 15.3 points through the first six games of the season. Former Lady Tiger Sylvia Fowles leads the league in scoring with 21.1 points per contest. Augustus has given the Lynx the WNBA’s best record thus far with a 5-1 mark.
For her career, she ranks third in WNBA history in all-time scoring average with 20.2 points per game. Augustus has started 135 of the 136 games she has played in her six years in the league.
The No. 1 pick of the 2006 WNBA Draft, Augustus went on to become the 2006 WNBA Rookie of the Year and she is a two-time All-Star selection.
At LSU, Augustus is the only three-time State Farm All-America recipient. The Baton Rouge native won National Freshman of the Year honors in 2003 and went on to be named National Player of the Year twice during her brilliant career.
Augustus ended her career with 2,702 points — second most in school history – and she became just the fourth player and first since 1995 to reach the 2,000-point plateau. She rewrote the record books at LSU as she scored in double figures in a school-record 97 straight games. On Jan. 24, 2010, Augustus became the first woman in LSU Athletics history to have her jersey retired.
