BATON ROUGE – For the second year in a row, seniors Andrew Loupe and John Peterson have been named Golfweek All-Americans as two of the premier players in college golf after leading the Tigers to a banner season highlighted by a second-straight appearance at the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships.
Peterson, the 2011 NCAA Individual Champion, earned a Golfweek Second-Team All-America selection for the second time in his collegiate career following his first career selection as a sophomore in 2009. His selection by Golfweek comes just over a week after he picked up a PING First-Team All-American honor on June 3 following his individual victory at the NCAA Championships.
This marks the second year in a row in which Loupe has been named a Golfweek Honorable Mention All-American after receiving his first career selection following his junior season in 2010.
The Golfweek All-America teams were selected based on the order of a player’s ranking in the Golfweek-Sagarin Individual College Golf Rankings. Peterson finished the season as the No. 13-ranked player in the country, while Loupe followed as the No. 40-ranked player in the country for the 2010-11 season.
Peterson defeated Golfweek Player of the Year Patrick Cantlay of UCLA by a single stroke to capture the national crown with a 54-hole score of 5-under par 211 at Oklahoma State’s Karsten Creek in Stillwater, which includes a course record and career best 7-under par 65 during the second round of the tournament.
In winning this year’s NCAA crown, Peterson snapped a 70-year drought as the first Tiger to take home a national title at the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships since Haas in 1937 and Stewart in 1941.
After also picking up a Second-Team All-America honor in 2009 and an Honorable Mention All-America accolade in 2010, Peterson becomes just the fifth three-time All-American in program history, which also includes Eddie Merrins (1952-54) and Rob McNamara (1985-87) along with McLendon and Toms.
Peterson will go down as one of the most decorated golfers in the history of the LSU men’s program as he has already earned his second First-Team All-SEC and third PING All-Southeast Region honors in 2011.
The LSU golf program made history with Peterson’s victory Thursday as it became the first school during the history of the NCAA Championships sweeping the men’s and women’s individual crowns in the same season. Lady Tiger freshman Austin Ernst took home the NCAA women’s crown nearly two weeks ago at the event hosted by Texas A&M at The Traditions Golf Club in College Station.
Loupe wraps up his LSU career as a two-time Honorable Mention All-American and two-time First-Team All-SEC performer after picking up both honors in the wake of a tremendous senior season. He received a second career PING All-Southeast Region accolade as well during this postseason.
