Track & Field Among Top 4 in Power Rankings

BATON ROUGE – With the field now set for the semifinal rounds of the NCAA Championships to be held June 8-11 in Des Moines, Iowa, the Lady Tigers are No. 3 and the Tigers are No. 4 in the final power ranking released Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The semifinal and final rounds for the 2011 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships are set to run June 8-11 at Drake Stadium on the campus of Drake University in Des Moines.

LSU qualified a total of 28 entries into the national semifinals with its performance this past weekend in a competition at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds held at Indiana’s Billy Hayes Track in Bloomington.

With 15 entries into the national semifinals, the Lady Tigers are tied for the third-most semifinalists in the country. The newly No. 1-ranked Oregon Ducks are tied with No. 8-ranked Texas with 16 semifinalists in the meet, while No. 2-ranked Texas A&M is tied with the Lady Tigers with 15 national semifinalists.

The Tigers have earned a No. 4 national ranking as they prepare to head to Des Moines next week. After a weekend in which it advanced 13 entries into the NCAA semifinals, the Tigers are tied for the fourth most entries into the semifinal round with No. 3 Florida State. No. 1-ranked Texas A&M leads the way with 19 entries, while No. 2-ranked Florida follows closely behind with 17 entries into the national semifinals.

LSU will return to Drake Stadium for the first time since a 2008 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships appearance when the Lady Tigers captured their last national championship.
