INDIANAPOLIS — The LSU men’s golf and women’s cross country teams received NCAA Public Recognition Awards on Tuesday for their outstanding work in the classroom as part of the NCAA’s Academic Performance Program.
The awards are given annually to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their Academic Progress Rates (APR).
LSU’s total of two teams tied for second in the Southeastern Conference behind Vanderbilt’s 10. Georgia, Tennessee and Ole Miss each had two representatives. Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi State and Arkansas had one team recognized.
“We are proud of our men’s golf and women’s cross country team for their academic achievement,” said Kenneth O. Miles, Executive Director of the LSU Academic Center for Student-Athletes. “They truly exhibit what it means to be the quintessential student-athlete.”
Through its innovative APR, which provides an annual scorecard of academic achievement, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I sports team. By measuring eligibility and retention each semester or quarter, the APR provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 academic years.
