Sixty-Eight Named to SEC Spring Honor Roll

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – LSU placed 68 student-athletes on the 2010 SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll Tuesday as announced by SEC Commissioner Mike Slive. The 68 representatives for the Tigers are the most since the 2006 season.

Track and field led the way with 28 selections highlighted by Samantha Henry, who finished her career among the program’s all-time leaders with 15 All-America honors over her four seasons. She wrapped up her collegiate career two weeks ago at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., where she picked up three All-America certificates.

A trio of All-Americans, Andrew Loupe, Megan McChrystal and John Peterson, were among the golf program’s 11 picks. Both McChrystal and Peterson finished inside the Top 10 at the NCAA Championships. McChrystal fired a NCAA Championship single-round record of 64 during her final round, while Peterson was the first LSU men’s golfer since Perry Moss in 1991 to notch a Top 10 finish.

The softball team added 10 selections after making its 12th NCAA Regional appearance in 14 seasons. Kirsten Shortridge, an NFCA All-America First-Team selection and one of 25 finalists for USA Softball Player of the Year, racked up 89 hits to rank second for a single season. Joining Shortridge were pitchers Brittany Mack and Cody Trahan along with starters Ashley Applegate, Courtney Hollier, Jessica Mouse and Juliana Santos.

The tennis program also came away with 10 honorees. Sebastian Carlsson, a CoSIDA District VI First-Team recipient, posted a team-best 20 wins. Nicole Kanter, a two-time SEC Community Service Team winner, finished her career with 80 singles victories.

Nine baseball players made the list including Paul Bertuccini, a CoSIDA District VI Second-Team All-America pick. The right-hander made a program-record 110 career appearances for the Tigers. He graduated with a 3.53 GPA in management during May. Johnny Dishon, Anthony Ranaudo and Austin Ross, players chosen in the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft, also were honored.

The 2010 Spring SEC Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2009 Summer, 2009 Fall and 2010 Spring terms. Any student-athlete who participates in a Southeastern Conference championship sport or a student-athlete who participates in a sport listed on his/her institution’s NCAA Sports Sponsorship Form is eligible for nomination to the Academic Honor Roll. The following criteria should be followed:

(1) A student-athlete must have a grade point average of 3.00 or above for either the preceding academic year (two semesters or three quarters) or have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution.

(2) If a student-athlete attends summer school, his/her grade point average during the summer academic term must be included in the calculation used to determine eligibility for the Academic Honor Roll.

(3) Student-athletes eligible for the Honor Roll include those receiving an athletics scholarship, recipients of an athletics award (i.e., letter winner), and non-scholarship student-athletes who have been on a varsity team for two seasons.

(4) Prior to being nominated, a student-athlete must have successfully completed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours of non-remedial academic credit toward a baccalaureate degree at the nominating institution.

(5) The student-athlete must have been a member of a varsity team for the sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment.
