PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad – After defending his 100-meter title at the Sagicor National Championships in Trinidad & Tobago on Saturday night, former LSU standout Richard Thompson returned to the track at Hasely Crawford Stadium on Sunday and wrapped up the meet by winning the 200-meter crown.
With two 100-meter titles already under his belt, Thompson took home his first career 200-meter crown at the Sagicor National Championships after running a seasonal-best time of 20.37 seconds in the final.
Thompson has proven to be one of the world’s premier sprinters again this summer as he owns wind-legal seasonal bests of 10.01 in the 100-meter dash and 20.37 in the 200-meter dash. He has been impressive in the 100-meter dash this season as he also owns wind-aided times of 9.89 and 9.90 in 2010.
The Baton Rouge-based sprinter garnered worldwide fame and became a national hero in his country after his senior season in 2008 as he won two Olympic silver medals in the 100-meter dash and 4×100-meter relay at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. He followed that performance in 2009 by taking fifth place in the 100-meter dash and winning third silver medal in international competition in the 4×100 relay at the IAAF World Championships in Berlin, Germany.
The highlight of Thompson’s 2010 campaign came two weeks ago at the IAAF Diamond League meeting at the adidas Grand Prix in New York, where he took the 100-meter title with a windy time of 9.89.
