BATON ROUGE — LSU football’s official Facebook page, Facebook.com/LSUfootball, is closing in on 100,000 fans, making it one of the most popular social media sites in all of collegiate athletics.

As of Friday afternoon, the page eclipsed over 99,400 fans. Only four NCAA Division I schools boast over 100,000 Facebook fans on their respective pages: Ohio State (304,600), Kentucky (133,900), Wisconsin (108,900) and Oklahoma (106,300).

Each of those schools pages are devoted to the entire athletic department and not one sport. LSU Athletics’ official page, Facebook.com/LSUsports, is approaching 30,000 fans. That figure puts the page among the top 25 most popular athletic department Facebook pages in the nation.

“It really isn’t surprising we were able to clear 100,000 fans on our football page,” said Craig Pintens, LSU Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing. “We have the most passionate fan base in the country with an unquenchable thirst for LSU football.  We are going to continue to do everything we can to engage our fans through our various social media outlets and are excited about some of the new social media initiatives we have planned for the upcoming year.”

A growing trend in collegiate athletics and beyond, social media websites offer fans an opportunity to connect with their favorite teams.

LSU has been on the cutting edge in college athletics when it comes to integrating social media into its traditional website and publications.

Through its sports-specific Facebook pages and feeds on the micro-blogging site Twitter, LSU offers its fans in-game updates, the ability to comments on articles, an option to share multimedia content, behind-the-scenes access to coaches and student-athletes, and breaking news.

The department also utilizes Twitter to provide media alerts about press conferences, weather delays and interview opportunities.

Each of LSU’s 14 varsity sports features its own Facebook page and Twitter feed that fans can follow. For a complete social media directory involving LSU Athletics personalities, coaches and sports, visit www.LSUsports.net/connect.
