BATON ROUGE — LSU guard Andrea Kelly underwent successful right knee surgery on Tuesday to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), it was announced by LSU women’s basketball head coach Van Chancellor.
Kelly suffered the injury while playing a pickup game during spring break. The surgery was performed by LSU team doctor Brent Bankston. Kelly is expected to make a full recovery and could tentatively return to the court in October after a rehab period.
“Andrea Kelly has meant so much to this program the past two years,” Chancellor said. “We really missed her this past season because she is a great shooter and 3-point threat. She’s also a terrific person, teammate and student. We expect her to make a full recovery and play an important role again next season as a senior.”
Kelly missed the entire 2009-10 season after suffering a stress fracture in her foot. As a junior during the 2008-09 season, she averaged 4.7 points and played in 30 games with three starts. She shot 34-of-84 (88.2) from 3-point range and that figure ranked as the eighth-best mark in single-season school history.
Kelly, a native of Shalimar, Fla., was the recipient of three awards at the Lady Tigers’ annual postseason banquet on Monday night. She won the Sue Gunter Courage award, the Kisha James Outstanding Teammate honor and the Cornelia Gayden Outstanding Attitude award.
