SAVANNAH, Ga. — LSU sophomore golfer Alexis Rather fell one match short of the championship round here Thursday, losing in the semifinals of the 90th Women’s Southern Golf Association Amateur Championship at the Deer Creek Course at The Landings Club.
Rather dropped a 2 and 1 decision in the semifinal match to junior medalist RemiJen Camping of Hollywood, Fla. Camping was the NCAA Division II Freshman of the Year at Barry University in Florida.
Camping will face Laura Coble, the player of the year in Georgia the past seven years, who beat Lindsey Bergeron, 3 and 2. The pair will play a 36-hole match for the championship.
Earlier in the day, Rather advanced to the semifinals with a quarterfinal triumph over South Carolina’s Laura McCaslin. Rather and McCaslin were fairly even until the LSU player caught fire on the back nine to pull away 4 and 3.
Also, in the first flight play for those not qualifying for the 32-player championship round, LSU golfer Rebecca Struthers lost in the semifinals on Thursday, falling to Taylor Bunnell of Germantown, Tenn., 3 and 2. Bunnell will meet Carolyn Creekmore of Dallas in the first flight championship.
