BATON ROUGE — LSU junior catcher Matt Liuzza and junior left-handed pitcher Jason Determann were selected Wednesday in the Major League Baseball draft.

Liuzza was chosen in the 30th round (910th pick) by the Chicago Cubs and Determann was selected in the 35th round (1068th pick) by the Boston Red Sox.

The 50-round draft began on Tuesday with the first 18 rounds and concluded Wednesday with the final 32 rounds.

Four LSU players were selected on Tuesday — senior outfielder Ryan Patterson (fourth round, Toronto); junior left-handed pitcher Greg Smith (sixth round, Arizona); senior outfielder Nick Stavinoha (seventh round, St. Louis); and senior infielder Clay Harris (ninth round, Philadelphia).

Liuzza, a Metairie, La. native, has started 159 games behind the plate for LSU in three seasons. His career batting average is .301 (178-for-592) with 32 doubles, 16 homers, 105 runs and 95 RBI.

Liuzza’s best offensive season came in 2004, when he hit .328 (75-for-229) with 14 doubles, nine homers and 45 RBI. He batted .251 (43-for-171) this season with 10 doubles, three homers and 24 RBI.

Determann, a Baton Rouge native, was named the 2005 SEC Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year with a 3.781 GPA in biology. He was also voted to the ESPN The Magazine second-team Academic All-America squad.

Determann received his undergraduate degree last month, and he has been accepted to the LSU Medical School in New Orleans.

Determann has a 19-5 career record and nine saves in 69 appearances (11 starts) at LSU. He has worked 213 innings, recording 40 walks and 178 strikeouts.

Determann was 5-0 this season with a 2.30 ERA and seven saves. He recorded 12 walks and 74 strikeouts in 62.2 innings, making 27 appearances (one start).
