Tigers Move Up to No. 3 in Track Rankings

BATON ROUGE — LSU’s men’s track and field team moved up one spot to No. 3 in the latest Trackwire 25 rankings, released Tuesday.

The Tigers are tied with Arizona at the No. 3 position with both teams garnering 42 points in the poll. SEC foe Arkansas tops the outdoor standings for the fourth consecutive week with 69 points. Florida is No. 2 with 60 points and Stanford completes the top five with 34 points.

In the individual event rankings, the Tigers are led by senior Bennie Brazell (400 hurdles), junior Kelly Willie (400 meters) and freshman Xavier Carter (200 meters) who are each listed at No. 2 in the country in their specialty events.

All three run on both the Tigers’ 4×100 and 4×400-meter relays that are ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, this week.

In addition, senior Willie Bradley comes in No. 10 in the triple jump.

For the Lady Tigers, five athletes and a relay team are listed among the nation’s top 12.

Freshman Ashley Owens owns the women’s top ranking, coming in at No. 3 in the 100 meters. Sophomore Tina Harris is No. 8 in the long jump, while senior RaNysha LeBlanc and freshman Kelly Baptiste are No. 10 in the 100-meter hurdles and the 200 meters, respectively.

In addition, freshman Deonna Lawrence is listed at No. 11 in the 400 meters. She also anchors the Lady Tigers’ 4×400-meter relay team that is ranked 11th this week.

Both the Tigers and Lady Tigers return to action this weekend when they travel to Philadelphia, Penn., for the 111th running of the prestigious Penn Relays.
