Track and Field Set for 2005 Alumni Gold Meet

BATON ROUGE — The LSU track and field team will host the 2005 Alumni Gold meet at Bernie Moore Track Stadium Saturday.

“It is a very competitive meet this year, and it is a chance to for us to run at home,” said LSU track and field head coach Dennis Shaver. “You will see a lot of fast times at this meet with the teams that are coming in.”

Action begins at 10 a.m. (CST) with the field events and the running events start at 1:30 p.m. The meet will feature close to 20 teams include conference foes Alabama and Mississippi state as well as Texas A&M coached by Pat Henry the former LSU track and field head coach.

“We are a little beat up right now but most teams feel that way right now,” said Shaver. “We got a lot done at Arizona so that changes the game plan here. Everyone is running this weekend, but with Kelly Willie and Bennie Brazell doing well in Arizona that means they will be working mainly with the relays.”

There will be 13 former Tiger Olympians running in the Alumni Gold as well as several members of the Canadian National team. Lolo Jones and Walter Davis are some of the Tiger Alumni notables who will be competing.

“This will be a big meet for those individuals who have not got a qualifying time for the SEC Championships and the NCAA’s,” said Shaver. “People like Xavier Carter need this meet to get the times that they need.”
