BATON ROUGE — LSU centerfield Camille Harris and Louisiana Lafayette star pitcher Brooke Mitchell earned Louisiana Sports Writers Association selection as this week’s softball players of the week.
Harris, a junior from Hendersonville, Tenn., was 7-for-12 (.583 batting average) in four games with 2 home runs, eight runs scored and four RBIs for a 1.083 slugging percentage. She also walked for times for the Tigers for a .700 on-base percentage with three stolen bases. Against Arkansas she was 2-for-3 in the first game with a home run, RBI and stolen base and 1-for-2 in the second game with two runs scored. She was 2-for-3 in the second Kentucky game with a HR and RBI and 1-for-1 in the third game with three runs scored and an RBI. She presently stands in the top 10 in four school career statistical categories.
Mitchell had a big week in leading the nationally ranked Cajuns to a Sun Belt Conference opening sweep of the New Mexico State Aggies. Mitchell was 2-0 on the week, had one complete game shutout and combined for two others, holding the Aggies to just one base hit. Mitchell struck out 22 NMSU hitters and gave up just one hit in the 42 at bats. She tied her season high with 15 strikeouts in game one of Saturday’s twin bill and used the outing to move into 12th place on the NCAA Division I career strikeouts list. Mitchell combined with Ashley Kirchberg on a no-hitter in game one of Sunday’s action as Mitchell pitched six innings of no-hit softball.
