INDIANAPOLIS — Seimone Augustus, a junior on LSU’s top-seeded Lady Tigers basketball team, received her second National Player of the Year honor in one day as the Associated Press honored her with the award on Saturday afternoon.
Earlier in the day, Augustus, a Baton Rouge native, was named the State Farm Wade Trophy winner as well as one of 10 Kodak/WBCA All-Americans.
“If I could dream of one perfect day it would be this one,” Augustus said about receiving the honors on the same day. “This is a day I will cherish, but I also know that LSU is here at the Final Four to accomplish more than just individual honors.”
Augustus and the Lady Tigers play Baylor on Sunday at 6 p.m. CDT in the national semifinal in the RCA Dome.
The Associated Press, made up of media from around the nation, annual present a player and a coach with national honors. Augustus received 39 of the possible 45 votes to earn the Player of the Year honor, while Michigan State head coach Joanne P. McCaullie was presented with the Coach of the Year honor as a brief press conference in the Westin Hotel.
Augustus has started in every game of her career at LSU, while becoming the 23rd player in school history to reach 1,000 career points and the eighth to accomplish the feat in two seasons. The Baton Rouge native is currently ranked ninth in the nation in scoring, 14th in free throw percentage and 21st in field goal percentage.
This season, the 6-1 guard had 18 20-plus games to equal 45 for her career and ranked second in the Southeastern Conference SEC in scoring.
Augustus became the ninth player in school history to collect at least 1,500 points and 500 rebounds. Named the Chattanooga Regional Most Outstanding Player, Augustus is averaging 23 points and five rebounds per game in the NCAA Tournament. Augustus became the school’s first SEC Player of the Year and National Player of the Year when she was honored by the United States Basketball Writers Association.
LSU completed its best season record by going 27-1. They enter the Final Four with a 33-2 record.
