Top-Seeded Lady Tigers Face Duke for Trip to Final Four

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — LSU’s top-seeded Lady Tigers basketball team will face second-seeded Duke for the right to advance to the Final Four on Monday at 8 p.m. CST on ESPN in McKenzie Arena.

LSU (32-2) defeated Liberty 90-48 on Saturday afternoon to advance to the Chattanooga Regional final. Duke (31-4) got past Georgia 63-57 on Saturday.

Seimone Augustus and Scholanda Hoston led LSU with 22 points each, while Temeka Johnson added 12 points and 15 assists in the victory that advanced the Lady Tigers to the programs’ fifth Elite Eight and third in three seasons.

Augustus enters the regional final leading LSU in the three tournament games, averaging 18.0 points, while Hoston is averaging 14.0 points and Johnson is posting 13.7 points and 10.1 assists per game.

“If Duke has any weaknesses,” LSU head coach Pokey Chatman said. “We have not witnesses them in person or on film. They do a great job of playing to their strengths and to me that is a sign of a great basketball team.”

Monique Currie led Duke with 16 points and 12 rebounds in the win over No. 6 seeded Georgia, while Mistie Williams added 14 points and 13 rebounds.

Duke held Georgia to 35.1 percent shooting from the floor and outrebounded the Lady Bulldogs 45-32.

“They are one of the better defensive teams we have played all year,” Chatman added. “They are disciplined, very aggressive and they will pick their opportunities to run.”

Currie leads the Blue Devils for the season, averaging 17.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, while Williams is scoring 11.5 points and grabbing 7.0 boards per outing.

This will be the third meeting between the two schools. Each team won of the previous games, including a Lady Tigers’ victory in the 2000 NCAA Tournament Regional Semifinal game in Richmond, Va.

The winner of the game will represent the Chattanooga Region in the NCAA Final Four in Indianapolis on April 3 in the RCA Dome. LSU is looking for a second straight trip, while Duke is looking for the school’s fourth appearance.
