MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Freshmen Niko Dalman and Miko Malberg represented the LSU swimming and diving team on day one of the 2005 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships from Minnesota’s Aquatic Center.

Dalman, participating in his first NCAA Championships, nearly qualified for the 1-meter springboard finals with a 12th-place finish in the preliminaries on Thursday morning.

The Auburn, Wash. native scored a mark of 301.50, a score nearly better than two-thirds of the field and remarkably as a freshman.

Dalman will also participate in the 3-meter on Friday and the platform competition on Saturday.

Malberg, also in his first championship competition, placed 32nd out of 50 participants in the 50 freestyle, swimming a time of 20.03.

Friday’s competition gets underway at Noon CT and will feature the 100 breaststroke, an event senior Christian Clausen will participate in.
