Track and Field Adds Seven Signees to Class of 2004

Tigers Dominate All-Louisiana Track and Field Teams

BATON ROUGE — LSU head coach Pat Henry swept Coach of the Year honors as the Tigers and Lady Tigers dominated the All-Louisiana track and field team, as announced by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association on Saturday.

The teams were determined by the best times submitted by track an field sports information directors from throughout the state in 21 men’s and women’s track and field events. The top three were listed in those disciplines. Individual awards were also voted on based on nominations submitted by the SIDs.

Henry led the Tigers and Lady Tigers to a sweep at the 2004 NCAA Indoor Championship, becoming the first school in history to win both indoor titles in the same season. He guided the Lady Tigers to within one point of the outdoor national championship, finishing second to UCLA, 69-68. The Tigers finished third in at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

On the women’s side, Muna Lee of LSU was named the Track Athlete of the Year, Nicole Toney of LSU was named the Field Athlete of the Year and LSU’s Tina Harris earned Freshman of the Year honors. The men’s honors went to Kelly Willie of LSU for Track Athlete of the Year, John Moffitt of LSU for Field Athlete of the Year and UL-Lafayette’s Moses Rugu for Freshman of the Year.

The most decorated athlete in LSU history, Lee won an unprecedented seven NCAA titles, including four individual titles. The senior from Kansas City, Mo., was crowned the 2004 champion at the 60-meter dash for the second straight year at the NCAA Indoor Championships, going undefeated through the indoor season. She anchored the Lady Tigers 4×100-meter relay team to their second consecutive national title, recording the third fastest time in collegiate history. In addition, she was the NCAA runner-up in both the 100 meters and the 200 meters.

Toney, a senior from West Hartford, Conn., was selected after finishing as the runner-up in the triple jump at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. During the indoor season, she earned All-America honors in both the triple jump and the long jump, finishing fifth in the triple jump and eighth in the long jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Harris earned All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor Championships after finishing fifth with a personal best leap with ranked as the ninth-best jump in school history. The freshman from Ruston, La., also placed fourth at both the NCAA Mideast Regionals and the SEC Championships.

Moffitt became the first athlete in LSU history to sweep the NCAA long jump titles, winning both the indoor and outdoor crowns in 2004. The senior from Winnsboro, La., also finished second in the triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships with a leap that ranks third-best in school history. During the indoor season, he set the school record in the long jump with a personal best leap of 27-1.75. The 2004 SEC Indoor Field Athlete of the Year, he is the only athlete in LSU history to have jumped over 27 feet indoors, a mark that ranked as the second-best in the United States and fourth best in the world in 2004.

During the outdoor season, the senior from Winnsboro, La., claimed the long jump title at the NCAA Championships with a wind-aided mark of 27-6.75. He also set the school record with a wind legal jump of 27-2.5 at the championships, breaking the 14-year-old record by two inches set by Llewellyn Starks in 1990.

A four-time All-American during the 2004 season, Willie earned runner-up honors in the 400 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The sophomore from Houston, Texas, also anchored the Tigers’ 4×400-meter relay team to All-America honors. He won the 400 meters at both the NCAA Mideast Regional and the SEC Championships. His time at the SEC Championships ranks second all-time at LSU. During the indoor season, he earned All-America honors in the 400 meters and in the 4×400-meter relay.

Rugu turned in a third-place finish in the 10,000 meters at the Sun Belt Championships. The freshman from North Kinangop, Kenya, also earned a top 10 finish in the 1,500 meters at the LSU Alumni Gold meet.

In the list of best times, it was Troy Lewis of Louisiana Tech with the best time in the men’s 100 meters, while Willie topped the 200-meter and 4000-meter times. LSU had the best times in both relays, and Matt Vincent of LSU topped both the discus and hammer throw events. Edwin Billot of McNeese State had the best mark in the multi-events, leading the state in the decathlon.

Lee topped the state’s times in both the 100 meters and the 200 meters, while Ruth Nanyinza of LSU led the state in both the 1,500 meters and the 5,000 meters. LSU had the best times in both relays and Megan Akre of LSU had the best mark in the heptathlon.
