BATON ROUGE — LSU’s national champion football and men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams, along with the Women’s College World Series participant softball team, the Final Four participant women’s basketball team and the NCAA Championship qualifier gymnastics team were honored by the Louisiana Senate and House of Representatives on Wednesday afternoon at the state capitol.
Senator Jay Dardenne of Baton Rouge recognized the teams in the Senate Chamber and Representative Donald Ray Kennard and Representative Sharon Weston-Broome recognized the teams and presented them with Commendation in the House chamber.
LSU’s athletic year, which began with Nick Saban and the football team defeating Oklahoma in the Nokia Sugar Bowl to win the school’s second national title. Pat Henry’s indoor squad became the first school to sweep the indoor NCAA Championships to win the school’s 29th and 30th national title.
Pokey Chatman led the Lady Tigers’ basketball team to the school’s first NCAA Final Four appearance, while D-D Breaux led the gymnastics team to a seventh-place finish in the NCAA Championships.
The year was capped when Yvette Girouard guided the softball team to within one game of playing for the national title in the school’s second trip to the Women’s College World Series.
Smoke Laval and LSU’s baseball have an opportunity to give the Tigers another crown, advancing to the school’s 13th College World Series. The Tigers opening play on Saturday at 6 p.m. against Miami (Fla.).
