CHICAGO — Former LSU All-American and current Chicago Cubs second baseman Todd Walker recorded his 1,000th-career hit on Wednesday in the Cubs’ 12-4 loss to St. Louis.
Walker, a two-time All-American at LSU in 1993 and 1994, is in his first season with the Cubs and is hitting .267 this season with seven home runs and 18 RBI. Walker led off the first inning with a single to reach the 1,000 mark. Walker, a Bossier City, La., native played at LSU from 1992-94 and led the Tigers to the 1993 national title, as he was named the 1993 College World Series Most Outstanding Player. He was also honored as the 1992 National Freshman of the Year.
Walker recorded a three-hit game on Thursday in the Cubs’ 12-3 win over the Cardinals, falling just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.
Walker began his career with the Minnesota Twins in 1996 and played there until 2000. He spent time with the Colorado Rockies (2000-01), Cincinnati Reds (2001-02), and then with Boston in 2003. Walker led the Red Sox to within a game of the World Series in 2003 as he batted .283 with 13 HR and 85 RBI.
