BATON ROUGE — LSU two-time All-American Kristin Schmidt was named one of 25 finalists for USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, as announced by the Amateur Softball Association on Wednesday.
Schmidt was one of five players from the Southeastern Conference named to the list. Joining former Tiger All-Americans Britni Sneed and Trena Peel, she becomes the third LSU player to be named a finalist for the award in three seasons.
A third-team NFCA All-America selection in 2003, Schmidt ranks second in the SEC in wins and fourth in strikeouts. The senior from Houston has posted a 21-4 record this season and is 9-2 in league play.
The USA Softball and NFCA National Player of the Week earlier this season, she was named the NFCA Leadoff Classic Most Outstanding Player after leading the Tigers to the tournament championship with our wins over nationally ranked teams.
Against nationally ranked South Carolina, she was one-hit from a perfect game. In addition, she has thrown five two-hitters this season as part of her eight shutouts.
With eight double-figure strikeout performances this season, she has moved into the top 20 in NCAA career strikeout history. With 982 career strikeouts, she is currently just 18 away from becoming just the 20th player in NCAA history to reach 1,000.
The Player of the Year Award is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country.
The list will be reduced to ten players on April 28 and three finalists will be announced May 11. The winner of the 2004 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award will be announced May 26 at the opening ceremonies of the NCAA College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla. The winner will be recognized and presented with the Player of the Year trophy during the ASA National Council Meeting in Mobile, Ala., in November.
A replica of the award will be placed in a permanent display in the ASA National Softball Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, along with photos of the winner. An additional replica of the award will be presented to the player
