Harris Named LSWA Hitter of the Week

BATON ROUGE — The Louisiana Sports Writers Association named LSU first baseman Clay Harris and Northwestern State pitcher Russell Dorton the players of the week Tuesday.

Harris was named as the Hitter of the Week, while Dorton won the honor as the top pitcher in the state last week as voted on by an LSWA panel of judges.

Harris his .467 for the week (7-of-15) with 3 home runs, one double, three runs batted in with six runs scored and a 1.133 slugging percentage while leading LSU to the series victory at Auburn, getting five hits in 11 at-bats at Auburn. He entered the week with just one home run this season; however, he homered in three straight games to raise his total to four. His solo shot at UNO last Tuesday broke a 23-game drought without a homer. He hit a two-out, two-run blast in the top of the ninth Friday at Auburn to send the game to extra innings, and his eighth inning solo HR Saturday tied the contest at 3-3 as LSU went on to a 5-3 win. He broke a scoreless tie on Sunday with a seventh-inning RBI single, sparking the Tigers to a 3-2 victory.

Harris is a junior from Slidell.

Dorton, a junior from Jena, La., compiled a 1-0 record with a 1.00 ERA in nine innings of work this past week. He improved his record to 3-1 in just his second start of the season on Sunday, tossing seven innings, giving up just one run on seven hits and striking out two in an 8-1 win at McNeese.

In his second game of the week, Dorton pitched two perfect innings of relief work against Louisiana Tech, striking out one.
