Swimming and Diving Starts Spring Season Against UL-Monroe

Tigers Move up to 20th Place Heading into Final Day of NCAAs

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — The LSU men’s swimming and diving team jumped four spots to 20th after Friday night’s completion of day two of the 2004 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships.

The Tigers hold 37 points heading into the final day of competition. Auburn, the defending national champion, extended its lead over Stanford with 435 points.

Evan Martinec placed fourth in the 100-meter backstroke to earn the seventh All-American showing of his career. The senior swam a time of 51.87, while Stanford’s Peter Marshall won the event in a world-record time of 51.87.

Martinec, Neil Lowe, Christian Clausen and Ross Hebert qualified for the consolation final of the 200-meter medley relay. The team placed second (10th overall), touching the wall at 1:38.59.

Clausen also swam in the 100-meter breaststroke. The junior nearly qualified for the finals with a 23rd-place showing in the prelims (1:01.25).

Chris Stanczyk finished 44th in the 200-meter freestyle (1:50.08).
