BATON ROUGE — LSU’s fourth-seeded Lady Tigers basketball team spent Monday both resting and preparing for No. 12 seed Maryland. The two teams will meet in the second-round of the 2004 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship on Tuesday at 8 p.m. CST in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
LSU (24-7) got past No. 13 seed Austin Peay 83-66 in the first-round late Sunday night, while Maryland (18-12) upset No. 5 seed Miami (Fla.) 86-85 earlier on Sunday.
Both teams went through scheduled practices on the Maravich Center on Monday and met with the press.
The victory on Sunday for LSU marked the sixth-straight season the Lady Tigers have advanced into the second round. It was the first time since 1992 Maryland had won a NCAA Tournament game.
Seimone Augustus, who scored a game-high 21 points in the victory over Austin Peay, leads the Lady Tigers into the second-round game. The 6-1 sophomore guard from Baton Rouge is averaging 18.7 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Senior guard Temeka Johnson added 17 points and 12 assists to Sunday’s win and is averaging 12.8 points and 8.1 assists.
Delvona Oliver, who poured in 22 points in Maryland’s first-round victory over Miami (Fla.), is averaging 11.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.
This will be the third meeting between the two schools and the first since 1987. The teams split the two previous meetings, including an LSU victory over the Terrapins in Miami, Fla., on Jan. 3, 1987.
