BATON ROUGE — LSU assistant track coach Dennis Shaver was named the Mideast Region Women’s Sprint/Hurdles Coach of the Year it was announced by the United States Track Coaches Association.
Shaver, in his eighth year as the Lady Tiger’s sprints and hurdles coach, is highly regarded as one of the premier sprint coaches in the country. Since his arrival at LSU Shaver has directed 18 individual NCAA champions and four national champion relay teams, in addition to guiding his athletes to 123 All-America awards.
This season alone, Shaver coached LSU standouts Muna Lee and Lolo Jones to national titles during the indoor season. Lee swept the short sprint events at the indoor nationals, winning both the 60 and 200-meter dashes, while Jones was victorious in the 60-meter hurdles.
This outdoor season, Shaver’s athletes have been just as successful. He has guided the Lady Tigers to the collegiate record in the 4×200-meter relay, the world’s best time in the 4×100-meter relay and a near world record breaking performance in the shuttle hurdle relay.
