Humphries Leads Louisiana Amateur Through Two Rounds

SHREVEPORT, La. — John Humphries, a senior on the LSU men’s golf team this past season, leads the 2003 Louisiana Golf Association State Amateur Championship by three strokes heading into the final two days of action at Southern Trace Country Club in Shreveport.

Humphries fired a 2-under par 70 on Friday after shooting a three-under 69 in Thursday’s first round. Humphries, a native of Alexandria, La., leads 1991 Amateur champion Eddie Lyons by two shots. Humphries was recently honored as an honorable mention selection on the 2003 Ping Division 1 All-America Team and was also a member of the Southeast All-Region Team. He was also a First Team All-SEC selection and was the Player of the Year on the 2003 LSWA All-Louisiana Golf Team.

“The course played easier because it was softer,” Humphries said. “I hit my irons really good, but was poor off the tee. Plus, I made a lot of stupid mistakes.”

“I need to hit a lot more fairways this weekend,” Humphries said. “I hit five fairways in the first round and six fairways today. I have to make it a lot easier on myself.”

Humphries’ father, Earl, finished as the runner-up in this event in 1999.

Saturday’s action begins at 7:30 a.m. and Humphries will tee off at 10:30 a.m.
